Officially the Hellenic Republic and historically known as 'Hellas', Greece along with its islands stands amidst the beautiful Aegean and Ionian seas located in south-eastern Europe. The remnants of its rich history showcase its majestic past and contribution to the western world. A Greek tour is incomplete without a visit to the ancient sites and here are 10 sites you don't want to miss.

Acropolis, Athens

The Acropolis was an ancient citadel standing on the sacred rock of Athens. The site is one of the most prominent sites in Europe. The remains of several architectural buildings such as the Parthenon, the Propylaia, Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion can be seen on site. It is said that the construction of this site took place in the fifth century BC. The buildings were seriously damaged during the siege by the Venetians in 1687. But never ceases to arouse the mythical fascination surrounding it and exertion of the architectural wonder.

Aigai / Vergina, Imathia

The ancient site of Aigai was discovered and excavated in 1976. As a result, a burial site of many Macedon kings was unearthed including that of Philip II, Father of Alexander the Great. The site also included a large royal palace and other artefacts which are displayed at the museum of Vergina.

Delphi, Phocis

Delphi stands amongst the slopes of Mount Parnassus and is one of the most fascinating sites of Greece. It is said that Delphi was visited by pilgrims from the Mediterranean seeking the prophecies of God Apollo. In later stages, it has served as both a military and political association of many states of central Greece. Amongst the most famous remains are the Temple of Apollo, the Stadium, the temple of Athena pronea and a Theatre which are visible on site.

Olympia, Elis

Olympia is where the ancient Olympic Games were organized. An entire sanctuary was built in honour of the Gods before the games begun. The sanctuary includes the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Zeus, the Pelopion and a designated area for sacrifices to be made. Apart from this, the Olympia consists of athletic installations. The Modern Olympic Games have been inspired by the prehistoric games held at Olympia.

Mystras, Laconia

The Castle town of Mystras is situated on the slopes of Taygetos Mountains. Mystras is the last of the Byzantine stronghold to be defeated by the Ottomans. The site includes the palace of Despots and many Byzantine churches consisting of magnificent architecture and fascinating wall paintings.

The Rhodes Island is located at crossroads between Europe, Middle East, and Africa.
