Top 5 Hong Kong Street Foods you must try - Delightful street foods in Hong Kong.

One of the best things about visiting South-East Asia is the delightful street food you get to treat yourself to.

1

Curry Fish Balls

Fish balls are one of the most popular snacks in Hong Kong. You can find it in restaurants, households and at many street food stalls. This is a popular snack to be eaten with afternoon tea. Hong Kong streets come alive with the smell of freshly made Curry Fish Balls during the early afternoon as they prepare for afternoon tea sales. You can take them on a skewer or a bowl whichever convenient for you. The fish balls are a delightful treat as they have the rice and fish combination. Most street vendors have now got into the habit of not putting a lot of filling and sometimes even keeping them without a filling. The experience and the crunchiness of the fish balls keep you wanting for more even if you miss out on the filling.

2

Siu Mai

Similar to Fishballs but instead of frying these are pinned onto a skewer and then steamed like dumplings. With popularity, they are now available with a variety of fillings ranging from pork, fish, chicken, tofu, eggs and vegetables. In order to reduce cost, most street vendors do not put a lot of the filling into the centre and add a little bit, in order to be able to differentiate the taste from one another. The Murray Hong Kong is known to be one of the best places to try Siu Mai if you would like to taste it at a restaurant.

3

Stinky Tofu

Despite the stench, stinky tofu is one of the most delightful snacks you can find in the streets of Hong Kong. The tofu cubes are soaked in a combination of milk, vegetable oil and some meat. This is kept aside to marinate for hours in the hope the tofu cubes will absorb the flavours in the dish. After many hours of letting it sit in the sauce, the tofu is then fried. The frying makes the outer layer of the tofu crispy and fresh whilst keeping the inside nice and soft. If you can get past the stench then this is a delightful snack that has a bit of sweetness to it with a flavour of curry.

4

Cheung Fun

This gooey and chewy delight is made of rolling steamed rice noodles into thick bundles. Most of the restaurants serve it with a filling to add more flavour but the street food vendors sell it with a creamy peanut sauce which adds a delightful balance in textures and flavours. The sauce is added on top of the Cheung Fun in order to let the flavours seep into the rice flour mixture and make it nice and tender.

5

Eggettes

Eggettes is a delightful street snack that is perfect to take with you when you are going sight-seeing or shopping. This is made with an egg batter that is poured onto a griddle pan and then cooked till it becomes crispy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside as you bite into it. Most street food vendors now offer many different flavours as topics such as chocolate, green tea and various other crazy combinations.
