5 Best destinations in Malaysia – explore the best attractions in Malaysia

Malaysia is home to several stunning locations – each one unique in its own way. From cosmopolitan cities, to mountain ranges and dense forests, here are our top 5 destinations to visit.

1

Kuala Lumpur

We can't have a list of top destinations without including the country's famous capital, Kuala Lumpur. The city's multicultural community is a big attraction and ensures that there's plenty of activities and culinary options to discover. Hop in a cab or ride the train to experience the different neighbourhoods and all they have to offer. Interesting sights around the city include Perdana Lake Gardens, Jalan Alor, the Petronas Towers and Chinatown.

2

Penang

Penang has long been considered a foodie's paradise thanks to the wide array of street food available here. Of course, that's not the only reason to visit. The picturesque city of Georgetown is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has plenty to see in terms of colonial architecture, museums, a coastal fort and outdoor markets. Take a stroll through the city and you'll come across several colourful murals left by visiting artists, running along the street of the city. End your walk at Gurney Drive, an esplanade lined with vendors and eateries that serve up an array of local Malay, Chinese, and Indian dishes.

3

Selangor

Situated not far from Kuala Lumpur, this populace city is home to the national zoo, several theme parks, mega malls and a Formula One racetrack. For a night of entertainment head over the Genting Highlands, the country's very own Las Vegas, situated on top of a mountain. The Sepang Goldcoast is also an hour's drive away – home to several scenic beaches and cultural hotspots, you won't regret a visit to Sepang. Hotel accommodation is plentiful here with several places overlooking the sea, like Avani Hotels & Resorts. Furthermore, the famous Batu Caves are situated in Selangor; the caves are home to a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to the Hindu deity, Lord Murugan. The caves draw large crowds so be prepared to push through crowds during peak season.

4

Cameron Highlands

The rolling hills of the Cameron Highlands are like nowhere else in the country. The lush greenery, cool climates are in complete contrast to the tropical heat you'll find everywhere else in Malaysia. Take a tour around the numerous tea plantations, or hike along the trails that weave through forests and around volcanoes. If you're looking for more relaxing activities spend a day on a strawberry farm or stroll the many greenhouses that contain a wide variety of colourful, sweet-smelling flowers.

5

Langkawi

Malaysia's own version of Phuket, Langkawi is a top travel destination for both foreigners and locals. The island has its own domestic airport and ferry that connects it to the mainland so getting there is fast and fairly inexpensive, making it a popular weekend holiday spot for many Malaysians. The island has several tourist attractions to keep you busy from the country's largest indoor aquarium, a scenic cable car, and the Sky Bridge that offers unforgettable views across the island.
