Located on the northern side of the island, the big Buddha is a prominent tourist attraction on the island. Rising majestically above the surrounding area, the 12-meter high golden statue can even be seen clearly from the air as you land at the airport. Built-in 1972, it is one of the most heavily visited attractions on the island, however, the statue is situated on the grounds of a working temple so expect to see many pilgrims as well offering flowers and incense. Because the site is a place of worship visitors are advised to dress appropriately when visiting; that means no beachwear or shorts.
A day trip to explore the Angthong National Marine Park should definitely be on everyone's list. Consisting of 42 limestone islands, coral reefs and clear blue waters, the marine park is a great place to admire the natural beauty and colourful underwater life. Some tour groups provide equipment for kayaking, snorkelling and even rock climbing. A must-see is the emerald lake on Koh Mae. Thailand is famous for its deliciously fresh street food and Ko Samui is no different. The various night markets are the best place to try street food, in particular, Chaweng market. Visitors can find their favourite Thai dishes from noodles to soups and grilled meats here for a fraction of what you would pay in a restaurant. You can also find several vendors selling trinkets, clothing and souvenirs along the way.
It wouldn't be a paradise island without white sandy beaches at every turn and Koh Samui has plenty of them. Powder soft sands, swaying palm trees and crystal clear blue seas feature heavily here, but some beaches are generally more populated than others. While it may come across as just another sleepy village, on Friday's it comes alive as the weekly night market springs into action. Feast on the fresh seafood, buy some souvenirs and explore the historic parts of the village.
