Best Things to Do in Brisbane for Free – There’s Quite a Range!

Strapped for cash but want to experience the best of sunny Brisbane? Well, you're in luck; the city is very considerate towards travellers on a budget, offering a range of top experiences and attractions you can explore for – free! Listed here are the best.

1

Go Meet a Brisbane Greeter

If you've heard about the New York Greeter programme, this one is no different. The Brisbane Greeter programme is conducted by a varied group of volunteers who take you on a tour of the city; the best really, since you get to explore the city with a local and no one knows Brisbane's secret attractions than this group of volunteers – best of all, it's free! So, whether you want to explore the city's eclectic art scene, learn about its WWII history or just scout out the best foodie precincts, go meet a Brisbane Greeter! You can check out the Brisbane Greeter Guided Tour programme online and if you're staying at any one of the perfectly located Brisbane city hotels, of which there are plenty like Oaks Casino Towers, it will be easy to just walk up and meet the team within the CBD.

2

Sail Across Moreton Bay

Oh yes, it's free! All you need do is get yourself to the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on a Wednesday and volunteer as a deckhand. Look up the Wednesday Afternoon Go Sailing (WAG) programme at the Manly Yacht Club, if there's room you can join the crew, as a deckhand and enjoy a cruise around beautiful Moreton Bay. Oh and in case you miss out on the cruise, get to the Yacht Club by noon, pull up a barstool and for a minimum rate enjoy a drink and bites.

3

Explore the Laneways of Brisbane

Brisbane's Laneways are not as varied as Melbourne's but good enough and pretty interesting for a taste of the city. Fortitude Valley is home to Bakery Lane, California Lane and Winn Lane which will do more than thrill the budget shopper. Reserve a pleasant morning for your lane exploring and enjoy your time checking out the vintage designer stores, stop for coffee at some of the city's best bistros and order yummy desserts from hole-in-the-wall eateries; all without breaking the budget.

4

Catch the City Cat

Not the furry kind though, the Brisbane CityCat is a catamaran service which lots of people use to explore the city's best landmarks via Brisbane River. The service runs past University of Queensland, Toowong, the CBD, vibrant South Bank, then New Farm, Bulimba after Hawthorne and finally to Portside Wharf. Cost depends on zones you wish to explore but if you are looking for a free cruise hop on the City Hopper a little red coloured ferry which offers free tours.

Savour Some Culture for Free

Visit the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) for a lovely dose of art and culture. The place is lauded as one of Australia's ground-breaking art galleries and boasts over 15,000 works of art within the complex. Located along the Brisbane River, the building itself is considered a work of art and quite a pleasant sight for lovers of art and beauty.
