Things to Do in Salalah - Oman highlights

Being the largest city in Oman, Salalah has a lot to offer to its travellers and here are some of the best things you can see and do while you are there.

1

Check Out the Museum of Frankincense Land

Frankincense is an aromatic item that is widely used in perfumes and incense, especially in the Middle Eastern countries. In Oman, back in the day, this was one of the primarily traded products. If you are curious about this and are eager to know more about the history and the uniqueness surrounding this item, this Museum is where you must go to find the answers. Exploring the Museum will take quite some time as it is large, so it is best if you plan it accordingly and keep aside a few hours for this. If you are staying at one of the centrally located Salalah hotels the likes of Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, you do not have to worry about transportation because the Museum is pretty close to your accommodation.

2

The Teeq Cave and The Tawi Ateer Sinkhole

The sinkhole in the area was found in the year 1997 by a few Slovenian explorers accidentally, and until then even the natives had no idea it existed. This is a natural sinkhole and is also the largest sinkhole on earth. Another mighty factor is the cave which is located right on top of the sinkhole. If you are planning on exploring both these natural wonders, it is best to take a guide along with you as it is quite a dangerous excursion for you to be making all alone.

3

Wadi Darbat

Located in the east part of Salalah, this is a beautiful valley that has a lake and a view that you will appreciate. The best time to visit this part of Salalah is during autumn as then, you will be able to witness the water descending along the mountains while they form a spectacular waterfall that falls from about hundred feet up. You will be able to take a boat ride on these water bodies and also feed the fishes found in the lake at the bottom of the waterfall. During the peak season, you will find many people setting up barbecues and picnics at the foot of the waterfall. Being Salalah, the image is not quite complete without a few camels lounging here and there.

4

Taqah Castle

Known to be one of the most popular and beautiful structures in all of Oman, this castle used to belong to a tribal leader and was his home. Now, this magnificent building showcases some tools and weapons that used to be a part of the ancient Oman life. The sunset view from this castle is known to be spectacular, thus time your visit accordingly.

5

The Salalah Festival

This festival is celebrated to welcome the wet season where the temperature drops and the sky opens up with the monsoon rain, which in turns makes the land become lush and full of greenery. The people of Oman will be ready with their traditional and cultural shows, to put on quite a festive event for the tourists who visit the city during this season.
