Mee Hokkien Noodle

Tipped to be a true Phuket classic, this stir fried noodle dish which is infused with prawns is the perfect meal any time of the day. As a big favourite among noodle fanatics, a dense yellow noodle is fried along with eggs, prawns, squid, bean sprouts and pork slices to create a wholesome dish which is as delicious as it is nutritious. Served with a pinch of sambal chilli and some lime juice, a bowl of Mee Hokkien Noodle is the preferred lunch and dinner time meal option for many locals in Phuket. The best places to sample this authentic dish include the Mee Ton Poe Restaurant and the Loktien Restaurant on Yaowarat Road.

Tom Yang Goong

Tom Yang Goong is a broth or a soup that is delectable due to the spicy prawn mixture that's used to infuse the dish with flavour. Although the original incarnation of this dish is the Tom Yang Goong Mae Nam, the Phuket variation is not the only option that's served in local restaurants. Differing on the types of meat that's used, the seafood version of this dish is called Tom Yam Talay while the chicken infused version is known as Tom Yam Gai. Creamy coconut milk is used to create the soup along with mushrooms, herbs, chilli and a host of other spices. The Dee Plee Restaurant and just about any other Thai restaurant in Phuket serves this popular broth noon and night.

Dim Sum

While Phuket or even the Thais may not have invented the dim sum, the sheer variety of dim sums available in the beach capital is a testament to just how popular the snack is in Thailand. Folded a minimum of seven times, well made dim sums have a fluffy look to them and include a delicious filling made from prawn, shrimp, pork or veggies such as green beans. Rich and soft on the palette, the best venues to dig into dim sum during a trip to Phuket include the Boon Rad Dim Sum hut and the Wang DimSum restaurant in Phuket Town.

Massaman Curry

Travellers with an aversion to spicy dishes will welcome a plate of Massaman Curry with open arms. The sweet tasting dish is a mouth-watering concoction made using lime juice, coconut milk, tomatoes and peanuts while basil leave also add to the flavour of the dish. As usual, one can also toss in meat items whether it's seafood, pork or beef to a Massaman Curry. The Oriental Spoon restaurant and the N.C. Restaurant are some of the top places in Phuket to sample this curry.

Gaeng Keaw Wan Gai
